Multicultural Health In Action (MHIA) is a student-run group focused on the professional development of students through the integration of learning and practice. MHIA engages students in projects related to multicultural health and health disparities during the academic year. Through these practical experiences, peer support, mentoring from community leaders, skills-based workshops and training, we hope to better prepare ourselves for future work in multicultural health and health disparities issues. MHIA has partnered with the City of Berkeley Public Health Division for the past two years, and is beginning to work with other local organizations as well.
Student Voice: Meena Nair, MPH, Health and Social Behavior 2011
MHIA is a great opportunity for students to have practical public health experience by collaborating with providers on their professional projects. By forming close partnerships with these organizations, students get an in-depth look at multicultural health issues in the field and how they are being tackled. I am really grateful to be a part of MHIA because I can hone in and improve upon my leadership and interpersonal skills with colleagues and community members themselves. As future public health professionals, we have an inherent obligation to let communities know and believe we are working with their best interests in mind. MHIA allows for that to happen, especially for communities who historically have been without a voice and are thus left vulnerable to the health care system. Want more information?
