Graduate Student Panel: Working in Public Health After Undergrad

Please join us for a “Meet-and-Greet” with graduate students from the School of Public Health!  Graduate students will share their experiences working in the field after college—ranging from research positions to non-profit work to international scholarships—and will offer advice for pursuing these types of opportunities with an undergraduate degree.  Graduate students from all departments in the School of Public Health will be available to answer questions and chat informally about job searching as well as the application process for grad school. Refreshments will be provided!

When: Tuesday, February 15th from 6-8pm
Where: 150 University Hall

Spring Shadow Day

Last year, 43 mentors from diverse areas were recruited for Spring Shadow Day, and a total of 39 students signed up for the event (almost a 50% increase from last year!). Mentors included Presidents and CEOs, Program Directors, Health Educators, and Lead Epidemiologists from organizations such as: Kaiser Permanente, Alameda and Contra Costa County Health Departments, Alameda Alliance for Health, La Clinica de la Raza, UCSF, and First 5 Contra Costa.

All students were individually matched with their mentor, based on both academic and professional interests. Students reported that  the experience was informative, helpful, and helped establish professional contacts.

"Dinner Dates"

The Student Board also led two "Dinner Dates" with small groups of students and community leaders.  The Leadership in Youth Health Dinner Date included panelists Sandi Goldstein, California Adolescent Health Collaborative, and Lloyd Nadel, CANFit, who spoke with 8 students about how to effectively work on adolescent health issues in California.  They shared tips about working with communities, gaining grant funding for different youth health issues and how to pursue a career in adolescent health.

The Emerging Leaders Dinner Date included panelists Jennifer Lind, CA Endowment, Jme McLean, PolicyLink, and Padmini Parthasarathy, Contra Costa Health Services, who spoke with students about being an early-career public health professional.  They discussed topics ranging from how to demonstrate their skills on a resume to how to gain leadership skills and opportunities early in their careers.
