Student Board The Student Board is a self-managed group that engages 15 students from almost all SPH disciplines to focus on developing leadership programs and activities. The experience of serving as a Board member provides students with a hands-on way to develop their own leadership skills by creating opportunities for the rest of the SPH student body. The Board also provides a unique opportunity for learning how to build and manage a decision-making body and allows for relationship building between concentrations and degree programs. Now in its fourth year, the Board has held 6 prominent grant-funded lectures with speakers Emily Friedman, Paul Farmer, Stan Glantz, Robert Reich, Naomi Akers, and Angela Glover Blackwell. In Spring 2011, the Board organized a mentorship panel where undergraduates in public health and related fields were able to talk to and connect with current SPH Students in various programs. Also in Spring 2011, the Board held the largely successful "De-Stress Fest," an event intended to lower stress levels in SPH students by providing pet therapy, free massages, free food, etc. In addition, through an application process the Board distributed over $2,500 in Mini Grant funding to allow six SPH students to conduct projects that allowed SPH students to lead from where they are, and were showcased in the "Mini Grants Symposium." During the 2011-2012 school year, the Student Board will continue to lead Mentorship, Mini Grants, and Board Development projects, as well as create a new initiative to enhance its participation and visibility within the larger SPH student body by implementing marketing and branding strategies.
