SESSION INSTRUCTOR BIOS

Arnold Chandler, Principal, A.L. Chandler Consulting

Arnold L. Chandler is an advocate, researcher, trainer and Internet strategist who for over 8 years has helped nonprofits and foundations advance programs and policies focused on social and economic equity.  Recently, he was a Research Analyst working with a team to reform the Oakland Police Department as part of a federal lawsuit settled in 2001. A researcher and policy strategist at PolicyLink for over five years, Chandler has also authored several important policy analyses and studies in the social justice field as well as advised several nonprofit organizations on the use of Internet tools for supporting advocacy and social change efforts.  He also trains the staff of nonprofit organizations in how to conduct research using cutting-edge Internet tools and techniques. His areas of substantive research include: Electronic advocacy and the digital empowerment of grassroots and advocacy organizations; Infrastructure inequity in unincorporated communities in California; Economic and Community Development in older industrial cities in the Northeast and Midwest; Digital Divide and Public Policy; Community-Centered Policing and Prisoner re-entry; and, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for policy change. Chandler has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a M.S. in Information Systems and Web Strategy. He lives in Oakland, California.

 

Dan Cohen, Founder, Full Court Press

Dan Cohen founded Full Court Press in 2001 with a vision of providing public relations, public affairs and crisis counsel to companies, foundations and non-profits who wish to use strategic communications to make social change. Dan is a veteran public relations, political communications and media strategist. He applied his belief in brand building public relations to all of the General Mills Brands including Wheaties, Cheerios, Box Tops for Education & Betty Crocker. His work at General Mills in the mid-1990's was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as being on the forefront of leveraging brands to greater PR success. Dan was a political consultant for initiatives and Democratic candidates for offices from mayor to Congress. He was recently named by the East Bay Business Journal as one of its "40 under 40," and serves on the Board of Directors of Alameda County Meals on Wheels. Dan is also on the Board of the Oakland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Dan is a licensed attorney but chooses to practice strategic communications … his passion.


Ana-Marie Jones, Executive Director, Collaborating Agencies Responding to Disasters (CARD)

Ana-Marie Jones, Executive Director of CARD-Collaborating Agencies Responding to Disasters, trains and supports nonprofits and their special needs clients in disaster preparedness, response and recovery activities. In her tenure, she has redefined CARD's services and curriculum to be based on the philosophies of community building, economic empowerment and leadership development. Before joining CARD, Ana-Marie worked for the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services Coastal Region, and as acting Executive Director of the Northern California Disaster Preparedness Network. Ana-Marie has also served on several emergency preparedness, and response planning programs and committees in Alameda County, and has toured internationally to share alternative approaches to disaster preparedness. She is currently on faculty as guest lecturer at UC Berkeley’s Center for Infectious Disease Preparedness. Ana-Marie is a passionate advocate for ending America’s disaster victim cycle and building resilient communities, where even the most vulnerable members will survive, thrive and prosper in the face of disasters and emergencies.

 

Ingrid Daffner Krasnow, MPH, Strategic Communications Specialist, Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG)

Ingrid Daffner Krasnow is a Strategic Communications Specialist with Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG), with a rich experience in providing media advocacy training to public health advocates working on myriad issues throughout California. She has also conducted health communications trainings in Mexico and Brazil and speaks Spanish and Portuguese. Prior to joining BMSG, Ingrid worked for more than a decade to broaden reproductive health access at the local, national and international levels. She has also served as the associate editor of the Kaiser Daily Reproductive Health Report, and as a research consultant for the Population Council, Office on Latin America and the Caribbean. Ingrid’s research interests include framing of women's health issues in the media and the impact of social marketing on contraceptive uptake. Ingrid received her Masters in Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles, and her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley.


Julieta Kusnir, MPH, Strategic Communications Specialist, Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG),

Julieta Kusnir, Strategic Communications Specialist with Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG), provides media advocacy trainings both locally and beyond. She has also contributed to bilingual radio programming in the San Francisco Bay Area for a decade. Julieta’s extensive experience in radio includes the airing of her work on many media outlets, including NPR, KCBS, and PRI, and ongoing work as producer and host of segments for La Raza Chronicles on KPFA radio with an emphasis on health issues. Julieta's long-time commitment to addressing health inequities, particularly those in the Latino community, drew her back to the university to complete a master's in public health. Her areas of interest in the public health field include the media's impact on civic engagement, as well as popular education strategies. Fully embracing her love of teaching and training, Julieta greatly enjoyed her time as lecturer at San Francisco State University and also continues to provide trainings for KPFA radio's apprenticeship program. In 2008, she received an Ethnic Media Health Fellowship through The California Endowment.

 

Holly Minch, LightBox Collaborative CEO

Holly launched the LightBox Collaborative in 2010 to harness fresh talent to help jump start strategic thinking, create clarity in real time, and identify actionable approaches to engage communities toward worthy causes. Because she believes it’s easier to draw people into your ideas when you’re having fun, Holly has created game-based tools for facilitation of accelerated strategy dialog; the fun format belies the deep questions she help teams tackle on a regular basis.

Holly’s work has been honored by the Council on Foundations with a Gold Award for Excellence in Public Policy Communications. Holly was named by PR News as a “Young PR Star,” recognizing her as a PR leader and creative practitioner in the industry. She was Editor of Loud and Clear in an Election Year, a guidebook created to help nonprofits convey their messages in the crowded election environment.

Her experience includes her work as Vice President of Spitfire Strategies, where she created communications programs for grantees of the nation’s largest foundations, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and The David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

Holly was Executive Director of the Communications Leadership Institute, where she helped nonprofits use high-impact communications to achieve social change. Holly also served as Director of the SPIN Project, assisting hundreds of grassroots groups with strategic communications resources. She launched the successful SPIN Academy, now in its 12th year. Holly started out as press secretary for the Sierra Club, alternately doing battle with and cozying up to the Washington, D.C. press corps. She was primary contact for the national media and created national, regional, and local campaigns.


Lisa Peterson, MPH, New Media and Education Specialist with UC Berkeley’s Center for Health Leadership (CHL) and Center for Weight and Health

Lisa Peterson, New Media and Education Specialist with UC Berkeley’s Center for Health Leadership and Center for Weight and Health, designs and conducts training programs for health professionals in the areas of new media, video production, program evaluation, and nutrition. Lisa, who has studied video production and created documentary films, is an instructor for the School of Public Health’s Video for Public Health Practice courses and is also currently developing online video modules for the California Pacific Public Health Training Center. Prior to her work at UC Berkeley, Lisa worked extensively in the community health field conducting community based public health research, leading trainings, and coordinating health communication projects in the areas of chronic disease prevention, positive youth development, and nutrition education at Children’s Hospital at Oakland Research Institute and the California Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program. Lisa received her Masters in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley with a concentration in health and social behavior. Passionate about creating innovative methods for public education and health promotion, Lisa is dedicated to harnessing the power of new media to address health inequities.


Chihiro Wimbush, Film Director and Producer, K Pacific Productions

Chihiro Wimbush is an independent film director and producer with extensive experience as a cinematographer and editor as well as a rich background in sound production, radio, and music performance. Since 2007, Chihiro has worked on three Center for Asian America Media Narratives feature film productions; as Production Manager for Wayne Wang’s “The Princess of Nebraska,” Associate Producer for Richard Wong’s “Option 3” and Co-Producer on H.P. Mendoza’s “Fruit Fly.” In 2008-2009, he wrote, directed, edited and produced the short film “Double Features” which has screened at numerous film festivals.  Most recently, Chihiro wrote and directed “Innerworld” a video adventure series application coming out soon for iPhone.

Chihiro’s documentary film experience includes traveling to Cambodia with director Mike Siv to film a documentary on the first Cambodian National Baseball Team; serving as Co-Producer/Camera/Editor for numerous documentary shorts; and serving as co-producer, co-director, cinematographer and editor of Redemption, a documentary feature following four homeless shopping cart recyclers in West Oakland.  He is currently one of eight documentary film directors selected for the 2011 Mediamaker Fellowship with Bay Area Video Coalition.
