10:30 Keynote: Allan Johnson: Unraveling privilege, power and difference One of the greatest barriers to ending racism, sexism, and other dimensions of privilege and oppression is that we are trapped in cultural ways of thinking that turn conversations about privilege and oppression into occasions for dominant groups to feel guilty and defensive, and for non-dominant groups to feel burdened and frustrated. As a result, the conversations we need to have either happen badly or, more often, don't happen at all. This presentation can help overcome that barrier by providing an alternative way of thinking about issues of privilege. We will examine the ways that our blinders keep us from seeing our own privilege and how that privilege harms others.

1:00 Shakti Butler: How can we build and nurture just, equitable and inclusive communities- reflecting on our experiences of privilege in our lives and organizations You are invited to spend time unwrapping, learning, healing and exploring what it means to effect possibilities for transforming the internal and external aspects of racism and privilege. Privilege is connected to a complex system that is destructive at every level of our society. As an entry point to this topic, we will spend time building community together. There will be an overview of the relationships within the system of racism that allow us to better understand the role privilege plays within this context. We will view film clips from the film Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible, as well as clips from our current project - Cracking the Codes: Race and Relationships in the 21st Century. We will probe both stories from the films, as well as your own experiences in your personal and work lives, in order to distinguish and analyze racism and privilege at both their internal and external levels. We will look at how privilege operates within organizations, and explore the impact of privilege in our work lives. There will be time to reflect, journal and have dialogue in pairs and small groups.

"The trouble around difference is really about privilege & power - the existence of privilege & the lopsided distribution of power that keeps it going. The trouble is rooted in a legacy that we all inherited, and WHILE WE'RE HERE IT BELONGS TO US. It isn't our fault. It wasn't caused by something we did or didn't do. But now that it's ours, it's up to us to decide how we're going to deal with it before we collectively pass it along to the generations that will follow ours."
